Description

Acorus calamus, as called 'sweet flag' or 'aromatic calamus' is a perennial rhizomatous, semi-evergreen aquatic plant of Acoraceae family, native to Europe, Asia and North America. It may grows up to 50-90 cm and 5-7 cm wide. The rhizomes are fleshy pink and tend to expand quite rapidly. The leaves are quite aromatic when crushed; in spring produces some ears of greenish flowers. The Acorus Calamus prefers very bright locations, but grows well in full sun to partial shade; It's very hardy and withstands winter temperatures down to -30 ° C. It prefers moist soils but can grow in submerged soil of a few cm of water. Is perfect choise for the edge of ponds, lakes and streams.
